A pickleball open-play rules template you can copy
Steal this. Paste it into your group chat or pin it at the courts, tweak the numbers, and you’ve removed 90% of open-play arguments before they start.
1. Sessions & sign-up
We play [day] [time] at [venue]. RSVP on the shared link by [cutoff]. Cap is [N] players; extras go on the waitlist and are promoted in order if someone drops.
2. Rotation & sit-outs
Games are doubles to 11, win by 2. We use a fair rotation: everyone rotates off after each game, nobody sits two rounds in a row, and sit-outs are shared evenly. The organiser’s rotation list is final.
3. Skill mix
Default is balanced teams so games stay close. When numbers allow we may run a stronger court and a developing court. Be honest about your level so matchmaking works.
4. Scoring & conduct
Call lines on your own side; give the benefit of the doubt. Winners and losers both rotate off. Be welcoming to newcomers. Repeated no-shows lower waitlist priority. Above all: it’s open play — keep it fun.
